![]() ![]() Straight means to play the rhythms as written. In jazz and other popular music styles, a tempo notation that says swing usually means that all rhythms should be played as triplets. Notes in jazzy-sounding music that has a "swing" beat are often assumed to be triplet rhythms, even when they look like regular divisions for example, two written eighth notes (or a dotted quarter-sixteenth) might sound like a triplet quarter-eighth rhythm. The quarter/beamed eighth note combination (or ta and ti-ti, du and du-de, etc.) is typically the first experience with rhythm in most elementary music. In other words, four 1/4 rests equals one whole rest while two 1/4 rests equals one half rest. It has one-fourth the value of a whole rest. What this means is that for the duration of one beat, no note should be played. First, alternate the hands RLRL and then reverse them (LRLR).Once you can do this strongly and evenly at a reasonable tempo, play the example with one hand at a time (RRRR etc and LLLL etc). This will help to prepare you for actual drum beats and fills. There are several ways to play this example. It’s a period of silence that lasts for one beat in 4/4 time. The following example uses quarter notes and quarter rests. When you see a dot by a note, you add half of the value of the note. A quarter rest is equal in time value to a quarter note. This video is a part of my series to introduce and explain rhythms starting with the very. ![]() Ill also cover the concept of downbeats and upbeats and end with an introduction to the single measure repeat sign. Music Lesson Part 1This video is a supplementary material you can use in introducing Rhythm in your music lesson.dont forget to subcribe to my channel. \): In a compound meter, which normally divides a beat into three, the borrowed division may divide the beat into two, as in a simple meter. Quarter Rest 1 beat of silence Half Rest 2 beats of silence Whole Rest 4 beats of silence Eighth Rest ½ of a beat of silence The Magical Dot Some notes and rests have a dot by their symbol. In lesson 5, Ill do a recap of whole note, half note, and quarter note rests along with teaching about the 8th note rest.
